Covid Testing for Travel FAQs

  1. How do I order my COVID-19 Testing for Travel? Visit covidtravel.clinicallabs.com.au to order your test in the week prior to travel. We will email you a copy of your referral to take to one of our COVID-19 Testing for Travel Collection Centres.
  2. What type of testing do you perform? Australian Clinical Labs provides 3 options for COVID-19 Testing for Travel:
    • RT-PCR: reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction testing. PT-PCR is the most accurate method for the detection of COVID-19 viral infections. This sample is taken using a swab to the throat and both nostrils. This is known as a nasopharyngeal swab.
    • IgM Antibody Testing: This test detects IgM antibodies as part of a Total Antibody screen. Please note that this is a blood test.
    • Combined RT-PCR and IgM Antibody testing: This option is for travellers requiring both types of testing.
  3. Which tests do I need? The requirements for each airline and country of destination are always changing. Please consult with your airline and the Immigration Department of the country you are travelling to for the most up-to-date information.
  4. Do your reports have a QR Code (Quick Response Code)?Yes, our reports contain an encrypted QR Code readable and verifiable by the airline. If the information in the QR Code matches the Certificate for Travel, a VALID response is returned. If the report has been tampered with in anyway, an INVALID response will be shown. This is to ensure counterfeit reports aren’t being used, potentially putting travellers, airport staff and airline crew at risk.
  5. When do I need to have my test? Most countries, airlines and cruise lines require travellers to be tested no sooner than 72 hours prior to departure. Some countries have a 24 or 48 hour requirement. It is important to check with the airline you are travelling with and the Immigration Department of the country you are travelling to in order to confirm your country of destination’s requirements.
  6. What is your turn-around-time for results? Please refer to covidtravel.clinicallabs.com.au/collection-centre for the most up-to-date turnaround time information for your state. Generally, our results are available 24-48 hours after collection.
  7. How will I receive my results? You will be send an email and an SMS letting you know that your results are ready. Your results are emailed to the email address used when purchasing your test. The results are encrypted and you will need follow the instructions in your email to access your results.
  8. Where can I go to get my test collected? Please visit covidtravel.clinicallabs.com.au/collection-centre for a list of collection centres in your state. Please note: if you require an IgM blood test, please make sure you visit a collection centre able to collect both the IgM blood test and the nasopharyngeal swab.
  9. Is this test covered by Medicare? Medicare covers testing for symptomatic patients for diagnostic purposes. This does not extend to asymptomatic testing for travel.
  10. Can I claim COVID-19 Testing for Travel through my private health fund or travel insurance? This depends on the cover and insurer you are with. You will receive a Tax Invoice when we email your referral to you and you can take this to your health fund or travel insurer for any eligible claims.
  11. How do I receive my negative test result? Your COVID-19 Testing for Travel Certificate will be emailed to you as soon as the test is completed. This email is encrypted and you will receive instructions in the body of the email for accessing your results.
  12. What happens if my result is positive? If your RT-PCR result is positive, you will be contacted by our Pathologist and your result will be notified to your state’s relevant health authority. You will be required to isolate until you are contacted by your state’s Public Health Department with further instructions. It is unlikely you will be able to travel. If your IgM Antibody test is positive, confirmatory testing is completed and the result is notified to the relevant State Public Health Department. A positive result may cause a delay in your ability to depart the country. We recommend you only choose IgM testing if it is a requirement for your destination country.
  13. Can I receive a refund if my travel plans change and I want to cancel my test? Yes, we can refund the cost of the test less a $25AUD administration fee per test. Refunds take 3-5 working days to process. Please note, if you have already had your test performed, you are no longer entitled to any refund.
